Flip phones are as popular as ever, but one criticism of many has been that one needs both hands to open the unit. This is not a criticism that can be levelled at the Nokia 6650, a popular flip phone that encompasses such a lot in a compact casing that an easily be flipped open with one hand.
A very slim design, the 6650 is a tribute to Nokia’s pursuit of excellence in design and comes very close to being the best flip design that we have yet seen. At only 100mmx47mm, and just 16mm deep, the 6650 takes this style of design into new areas while compromising not a bit on the ability of the handset itself. It remains very stylish indeed while matching many rivals in the use stakes.
Screen and usability
Dual screens are the norm these days and the Nokia 6650 is no exception, and a 16 million colour internal screen is pretty much second to none in the class. With high resolution TFT capability this provides a fantastic visual treat and further enhances the beauty and ability of this excellent and enduringly popular handset.
Among flip phones there have been complaints of less than adequate keypads, but again the 6650 scores very highly indeed – it is a very easy pad to navigate and provides a nice touch and a very accessible unit.
In terms of user-friendliness I have found few as nice to the touch as the 6650, and this will undoubtedly appeal to the frequent user.
One thing that often appears with lightweight flip phones – this one weighs little over 110 grams – is that they feel lightweight, and while the Nokia 6650 is very light it feels quite sturdy when closed or open, something that we have come to expect with this esteemed manufacturer.
Media package
Having touched on the usability of the 6650 it is important to remember that this handset is aimed at a market sector that puts a high price on media capability, and with a two mega pixel camera that is easy to use and features all the usual bits and bobs this handset does not let anyone down. Video capture is very good for the class and the ability to send and receive clips via the more than adequate messaging systems adds to the appeal of this already very appealing phone.
In terms of music the 6650 lacks for nothing, hosting many formats including the usual MP3 and packing an FM radio into the bargain. The entertainment factor is heightened as this phone comes exclusively on T-Mobile who provide a number of exclusive features just for users of their products, and all this adds to the features available on this very neat and tidy handset.
Bluetooth and USB connectivity are all present and correct, and the usual messaging services – SMS and so on – are here in abundance, while a good battery life offers an amazing six hours of talk time or 350 hours standby that is the equal of anything in this class and the better of many.
Web surfing is via a good high speed broadband service and the GPS system allows navigational capabilities that will be the envy of many, while memory is extendable by the usual card in the slot method.
All in all the 6650 continues the Nokia tradition of providing excellent design ethics along with usability and style, all the while keeping abreast of the latest developments and needs that the modern mobile phone user demands. In terms of flip phones it is little surprise that the 6650 emerged as a market leader as it is among the neatest and best designs in the class, and it should feature on the shortlist of anyone looking for a compact device with good facilities for everyday use.
