Nokia 6300 review

The Nokia 6300 has rightfully come to be regarded as a classic in the mobile phone market, a fantastic design that is not just beautiful to look at but excellent to use, too. Slim and stylish, and available in three colours – silver, black and white – the 6300 is among the most popular phones on the market, and is set to continue as such as long as it is marketed. With a good camera, Bluetooth, MP3 and expandable memory, the 6300 promises much, and delivers. Let’s have a closer look:
Looks
Make no mistake, the 6300 is a great looking phone. Typical of Nokia, the emphasis is on simplicity and with no excess spared the effect is very beautiful indeed. The phone looks great in silver, when the stainless steel is used to best effect, and feels good too. There is nothing flashy about the 6300 – it just is what it is, and that is a very stylish and purposeful phone that says ‘quality’ from every angle.
Features
It has to be said that Nokia have hit the nail on the head where the size of the 6300 is concerned – it may be the optimum size and weight for a mobile at just under 90 grams and less than 12mm thick. Yet it feels right, just enough weight to do away with any fears of flimsiness. It’s easy to use, too, with an excellent keyboard – big enough and sensitive to the right amount – and a very good high resolution display.
Other features include:
A 2 mega pixel camera – this is a great device, very impressive and highly regarded in mobile circles, and with an 8x zoom. It may not be an 8 mega pixel monster, yet it is very good at what it does. The video capability is excellent, too.
Display – full TFT with 16.7 million colours and 1 240×320 pixel 2 inch screen – easily adequate and better than many more expensive competitors.
Music player – MP3 and MP4, plus the usual array of alternative formats make this a very usable feature indeed, and with MP3, Polyphonic and video ring tones it surpasses in the novelty stakes. There is also a good FM radio with a visual feature.
Integrated loudspeaker – perfectly good and fit for the purpose.
Voice commands – the 6300 has a very good voice command, and voice recording, feature that many will find useful.
Messaging – the usual SMS and MMS, plus email and instant messaging, and Nokia’s own audio messaging service give the 6300 a full house.
Push to talk – the usual Nokia feature that makes things much easier.
Personal organiser – a full organiser with calendar and note section, plus to do lists and more, is featured along with a 1000 contact library, an alarm clock and a useful countdown timer.
Memory – a 7.8 Mbyte standard memory can be upgraded to a more than adequate 2Gbytes.
Connectivity – Bluetooth 2.0 plus USB, WAP enabled and GPRS, with XHTML web browser and triband.
Talk time and battery – 3.5 hours and up to 14.5 days are not the greatest figures, and may be the only down side to what is an excellent phone.
Should you buy?
If owning a design classic appeals to you then yes, you should, and if owning a design classic that is also a great phone you should rush out and grab one! In all seriousness, the 6300 stands comparison to any other phone in the class, as evidenced by its continuing popularity and the high regard with which it is held.
It has great navigation qualities and excellent abilities, and is packed with all the features that such a device should have. On the down side is the poor – relative to some others – battery life, and this is a normal problem with phones as slim as this.
Overall, though, the verdict is yes – buy the 6300 and you will not be disappointed.
